This is a story I'm currently writing right now and I have been for years... It's gone over a lot of revisions and rewrites over the years. So I'm sorry you only get a work in progress prologue for now. Also a test to see how much I can put into a single post... xD.

PROLOGUE
The moon shone across the planet of Noverlis, blanketing the land in a soft silver light. The night was beautiful; no clouds, the stars shone like diamonds in the sky, and the moon watched over the land with her never-ending gaze. With the coming of the moon, nocturnal animals silently left their homes and came out to hunt. Owls hooted through the night and the sounds of their wings were prominent in the air as they went hunting.
But with the moon came another thing that spread fear like wildfire across the planet. A madman spoken by many who only heard the tragic tale this man left behind him. A man simply known as the Plague who went all across the planet, searching, looking, murdering and maiming men, woman and child alike. No one knew his motive, but all knew one thing: fear.

The humans of the Alsendia continent, the northern most continent, were such people who feared the Plague. The capital of the humans, Estind, was lit up. The streets were painted in an orange glow from the lanterns that soldiers held on themselves. Soldiers of all ranks were patrolling the night time, each with spears or swords in one hand and some with shields others with lanterns. They wore armor the color of brass on themselves and each had a stern look on themselves; their eyes looking at every detail, as if waiting for a lion to spring out and kill them then and there. Though that lion was named the Plague.

"Sire." said a vassal, bowing before the King of the Humans. "Patrolling is going according to plan. Those outside during curfew were escorted to the nearest inns for the night and are instructed not to leave."

The King sighed. "Good... At least my people are safe."

"What are your further orders?"

The King paused. "...Has anything or anyone been suspicious?"

"Not that we could have seen, Sire."

Where are you...?

Standing on the top of a large hill that looked over the capital stood a large humanoid-like man. Wrapped in a cloak, it was hard to see exactly what he looked like aside from a pair of black dragon wings that stood out of his back as well as his dragon tail. He looked over the capital and chuckled to himself, a chuckle almost insane in its own way. He took the cloak and wrapped it closer to himself as he folded his wings and wrapped himself in them. His decayed left arm, which looked as if the skin was rotting off the bone, stuck out of the cloak before he picked it up, look as if he grabbed the capital, and made a fist, as if he destroyed the capital with just his hand.

"These creatures are pathetic." He spoke to himself. "To think that they take sword and shield against me and think they can fight away death itself, escaping it to survive... Death will always exist and it will always come. Inevitable, I say, but still, these insects think they can stand against me and live."

Smiling slightly he whipped his arm back and folded his wings more inward. Suddenly he shrank down into his shadow, disappearing completely. He looked around, seeing the world beyond the world of light: the Shadow Dimension. He traveled through the dimension as the laws of physics did not apply in the world. The hill he stood on was upside down, although he still stood what should be upright. Shadows were no longer shadows, but pools of light that acted as portals to the Light Dimension. In this realm, the constant growl of monsters were heard and some passed the madman, staring at him with their demonic red eyes and then rushed past him, some hunting animals only found in that dimension such as birds with webbed wings instead of feathered wings.

He reached the capital undetected by the soldiers. He smiled and pulled himself through one of the larger pools of light, coming out of the portal only like a black mass before the shadow exploded off of him and sunk back down. Standing against the wall of a large building, he waited patiently for the soldiers to come by; waiting ever so silently, licking his lips as if he hungered for bloodshed.

The King sighed, looking outside on the balcony of the castle. Soldiers were alarmed he would step outside his chambers and tried to bring him back, but he pushed them aside and hollered out: "If I die, then so be it! I refuse for my Kingdom of Syneria to be crushed by this man!"
Clank! Clank! Clank! The rhythmic sounds of the soldiers armor reverberated throughout the entire capital.

The Plague kept his ears open, watching and waiting, his heart racing due to anxiety. Come closer, my prey... I hunger for your flesh!

The soldiers, oblivious to the Plague, began to walk towards his direction, down one of the main streets of the capital. The second one of the soldiers came into view, the Plague jumped out of his hiding spot, leaping much like a panther, and tackled down the soldier, smiling insanely. Instantly he whipped out his hand and the shadows around him melded into one solid Dread Scythe which he used to cut the head of the soldier. A second later, the ghostly apparition of the soldier came out of the body and was absorbed into scythe. Licking his lips as if he had finished eating his kill, he stood up and pointed his scythe out at the soldiers, his insane eyes glinting with glee at the sight of wanting to see blood be spilled. Instantly the scythe turned into a pure black sword; the hilt appeared to be the maw of a dragon which bit down the blade and an ancient language was written alongside the blade in red.

“It's the Plague!” they screamed.

“Hold steady!” said the leader.

The Plague snickered and looked at them, tilting his head that the little amount of light that was cast from the lanterns revealed that he had red hair. “...So... Are you the commander of this battalion?”

“Yes.” The leader said, his voice unwavered.

“You speak calmly. Good.” The Plague said. “Maybe perhaps you will be a greater fight than these fools that you call soldiers of arms.”
“Do not insult my men.” The leader said. “We are the finest by far!”

The Plague laughed insanely. “Oh do you think? Then why do I smell their fear? Their knees are ready to buckle in, their hearts racing... These are not men of valor! These are women!” He smiled, revealing his teeth, some that looked as sharp as daggers.

The leader growled and drew out his sword with his right hand. In his other hand, he held a bronze and silver shield which had the Royal Family's crest on it: a gryphon-like beast with the body of a lion and a wings of an eagle. In the gryphon's talons was a long sword.

“Haha! So you dare think that you can take up sword against me and fight me? You are pathetic and sorely mistaken you fool.”

Growling, the commander growled and charged at The Plague, their two swords striking and a shower of sparks appeared. The Plague snickered slightly and with one arm pushed back the commander making him fall over. Catching and correcting himself, the Commander twisted his body around and did another assault, this time swinging his sword around with the Plague once again blocking it. Quickly pulling off, the commander thrust his sword forward. The Plague merely dodged by turning his body and arch his back. The Plague laughed sickly, thinking the fight was nothing but a game to himself. Again the commander tried to attack him, thrust his shield in front of him to bash the Plague in the skull, but the Plague growled a bit and disappeared through the shadows. Confused, the commander looked around and before the Plague could deliver a fatal blow the commander caught him and sword hit shield.

“Ohoho... Not many can react so quickly to an attack from the shadows.” The Plague commented.

“I've had training.”

“Confident are we?” The Plague snickered. “I'm through playing games now, boy.”

Raising the sword and pointing it skyward, the Plague snickered as the blade began to glow a deep red. Black lightning jumped off the blade and erupted, the lightning jumping up to the sky, parting a single large cloud into two separate clouds. The commander gasped and stared at him, eyes wide. The sounds of many souls crying in agony could be heard out of his sword. The Plague's eyes, barely visable, were wide and full of insanity. Whipping his sword around, it still sparking, it sent a wave of dark energy that crashed through the earth until he swung it upwards again, creating a diagonal rip in the earth and through some parts of two stone buildings.

“...What...What are you?”

The Plague drew up his sword and charged at the commander. Sword hit shield again, but the power from the sword erupted and struck out at the commander. Stunned, the commander dropped his shield and backed away, his sword being held by two hands now. The two once again dashed at each other, sword hitting sword, both of them putting all their strength into each blow, the commander hoping to land a blow and The Plague growling in distaste, wanting the warrior to fall to his knees. They stood there for a moment before they both jumped a few yards away, both staring at once another. The Plague gave a small sigh and let his sword lay at his side, closing his eyes, relaxing his muscles enough so he could give a stronger blow.

Before he opened his eyes, one of the commanders soldiers grew courage and charged at the Plague. Suddenly a roar was heard all around and the shadows around them began to almost almost pulsate. The Plague opened his eyes and laughed insanely, whipping his hand out before a large mile long dark beast came out of the shadow, landing hard on the ground, it whipping its skull head back and forth, roaring madly. The soldiers dropped their weapons, even the commander, and stared in awe and fear at the monster before them.

“Do you think I am completely defenseless? I rule all darkness and her children!” The Plague whipped his hand and the beast shot out a jet of flame at some of the buildings. “Now... Where is your king?”

“I will not tell you! I rather perish!”

“Then so be it fool!” The Plague said.

Instantly he opened his hand and concentrated on his dark power. A small orb no bigger than a pebble appeared before it grew in size to be almost as a fist. He snickered and then tossed it at the commander, sparks flying off the orb before it touched him and exploded, like an over-filled balloon. The commander yelled in pain before his mid-section ripped open, the top part of his body flying in one direction and the bottom part another direction. Instantly he died and his once proud battalion now quivered with absolute fear, one of the soldiers running to the top half of their commander to check on him, noticing the only look the commander had on his face was a look of absolute fear and pain.

“Now... Where is your king?”

The Plague snickered and walked slowly over to the soldier, licking his lips, as if he had eaten a fresh kill. The soldier holding onto the commander dropped him and scrambled to run away before the Plague came up to him and grabbed him by the shoulder. The soldier caught a glimpse of the Plague's face and absolute terror coursed through his veins.

“What are you?”

Again the Plague said: “Where is your king?” He began to thrash the soldier in the air. “Tell me!”

“...He's... He's...” The soldier pointed towards the Castle. “A secret passage way... Under the Castle... There's a shelter made just for the King in dire situations.”

The Plague laughed. “Dire... Seems fitting. You're useless now.”

Squishing the man's neck and snapping it, the Plague felt satisfied and commanded the large beast to lower its head enough so he could jump on top of it. Instantly the shadows began to pulsate again and the beast and the Plague sunk into the shadows.

A soldier ran up to the King, spear in hand. “My Lord... The Plague is here! Commander Tyrin has fallen to him and his battlion had scattered in fear.”

“Where is he now?”

An echoing laugh was heard, filled with madness. “I'm right here you fool.”

Instantly behind the soldier, the shadow he cast began to lengthen before it took the shape of the Plague. He came out of the shadow, cloak and all, and stood behind the soldier. Before the King could warn him, the Plague stabbed the soldier in the back through the heart and then ripped upwards, cutting muscle, tendon, and bone all in one swipe. The soldier fell down, dead, blood spilling out of his carcass.
“So... You are the King of the Humans...” The Plague said, reaching down to the dead soldier's body, putting his fingers in the mans blood before he took it up and licked it.

“You are a disgusting excuse of a creature created by our God.”

The Plague laughed. “Oh you don't know the half of it, my miniscule, pea-sized brained fool.”

The King drew his sword. “To what do I owe the visit of the Plague in my own castle?”

The Plague laughed. “Drop your weapon. I'm not here to kill you. In fact, I need you as part of my little game.” The Plague lifted his arms and the shadows began to float making a flat board with two sets of pieces on the board; one set of pieces were black and the other were a dark purple. The pieces began to move on their own accord, placing themselves in specific locations. Some of them jumped others and the pieces they killed were on the side of the board, laying on their side. “This game is much like the game you humans made so many years ago... This is like Chess and I am the game master... Now see these black pieces represent what I have done and what I will do.” Gesturing to some of the pieces, he began to explain his entire plan, right in front of the King. “Now this is where you come in.” He said, pointing to a piece shaped just like the King, and he pointed to a piece right in the middle with nothing around him, as if the emptiness around him represented the unknown. The piece that was all by itself looked like a fragile man, with long hair and two wings, although it was unknown what types of wings they were. Out of all the purple pieces remaining, it was the brightest one. “You see... I'm looking for someone special... I've greated mass chaos to draw him out, but he still hasn't shown, but I've figure out... A possibility of where he is... All I need to do is extract the right information. This is what I want you to... If you want me to spare your pathetic kingdom, all your servants and countrymen will have to listen to me... You will find this man... You will find for me He Who Controls the Elements.”

“And... If I don't or can't?”

“Then your kingdom will perish under the torrent of mighty flames my child of the dark!”

The King paused, then sighed, withdrawing his sword. “...I'll do as you wish, just spare my people.”

“How noble.” The Plague mocked. “Kingdom after kingdom will soon bow under me...” He turned around and began to meld through the shadows. “Anyone who uses any magic is, by my decree, to be placed into a dungeon and be chained.”

“Yes... Whatever you wish.”

The Plague snickered and melded out of the castle. Instantly he warped to top of the castle and looked below, seeing the soldiers staring at the madman. He extended his wings and gave an insane smile and shouted out at the top of his lungs: “Listen to me now, you ants and worms! The Kingdom of the humans now belongs to me and your king has submitted his will to me! Unless you want to be killed and murdered, you will bring me He who Controls the Elements!” He saw the soldiers quiver and run about, some breaking down doors and bringing anyone who used magic.

Looking up at the moon, he smiled and thought to himself: It happens again... After so long... I shall have my revenge against you...

Comments like these annoy me because usually "Cool story, bro" is used when you totally skipped it. If you didn't bother continuing, don't comment. =\
