Navi has a reputation for trying to get your attention too much, whereas Fi is Captain Obvious incarnate. Watching my bro play through the game, I could almost start to predict when Fi would pop up to say something, and what exactly it would be she would say. Or rather... I had an 80% success rate at predicting Fi's statements on the obvious. Ha ha.
I seriously love Fi, but she did start to get pretty obnoxious with her overly-abundant observations ("Do you hear that, Master Link?" oh, you mean that thing I could hear snoring from like the bottom of the tree? YES, Fi, I hear it). I guess in that sense, she was more annoying. I have to admit, though, she's still more helpful than Navi. I remember as a kid trying to get some assistance with where to go to next (I think it was the Zora's place), and she just mentions some stupid cold wind. What the hell am I supposed to get out of that? Where Fi guides you much more effectively when you call upon her.
Still.... Fi was pretty grating. But at the same time, it made it kind of fun to know exactly what she would say next, and when.
^ I agree with this statement. Fi would just NOT let me figure out the game myself. But that's how Nintendo is now. Even in OoT 3DS, they made it easier and even put a SHEIKAH STONE in OoT 3DS in the Temple of Time so that poor little, helpless gamer's like us could get somebody to kiss our booboos and make us feel better when we don't know where to go. There is a Sheikah Stone in OoT 3DS and Skyward Sword. You don't need a mask or anything to talk to them and obtain their hints, tips, tricks, and flat out answers as to what you are to do next. So I had both Fi and the Sheikah Stone holding my hand in Skyward Sword. Let's just say, it was like watching a workout video but not doing any of the workouts and then saying "Woohoo! I just beat the amazing, hardcore workout!!!" ... -_-;
I thought Navi was cool in OoT. She was your first helper. I thought it was a good spin and twist. And OoT was a pretty big game with all of the skulltullas and heart pieces. I honestly needed the help the first time I went through that game. It's like, why do we need some helper now? Why do you need to give someone to hold our hand as we walk through the game? Talk about tiresome. I would like an LoZ game where you get NO HELPERS.
But yes. Long post short. I liked Navi better than Fi. Navi was orginal. The first LoZ game with a helper. But now it just seems like every "helper" after Navi is just a recreation of her because she was such a hit!
